Responsibilities

The Surgical and Procedural (S&P) Services - Charge Nurse assists the Clinical Supervisor by serving as the primary liaison for an assigned care area with physicians, staff, patients, and families. Key responsibilities include:

  • Primary Contact: Serve as the main contact for care area communication.
  • Patient Flow: Coordinate patient flow within the care area, facilitating admissions, discharges, and transfers to maximize unit capacity.
  • Care Assignments: Make patient care assignments based on patient acuity, care needs, and staff competency.
  • Safety and Quality: Coordinate patient safety, quality, and regulatory activities for the assigned area, ensuring the unit is survey-ready at all times. Monitor Pyxis for discrepancies and clear them by the end of the shift.
  • Liaison Role: Act as a liaison for staff, patients, families, and physicians, collaborating with the Clinical Supervisor when necessary.
  • Complaint Resolution: Receive, document, and attempt real-time resolution of complaints or suggestions from patients, visitors, and other departments, referring unresolved situations to the Clinical Supervisor/Manager.
  • Staff Evaluation: Provide evaluation data/feedback regarding assigned staff to the Clinical Supervisor/Manager.
  • Coverage: Provide coverage as a staff RN, including break coverage as needed.
  • Miscellaneous Duties: Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications

    Education:

    • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing preferred.

    Experience:

    • 2 years of experience as a Staff RN in the area of assignment or demonstrated competency by achieving a minimum of 35 points on the RN Competency Model Evaluation form.
    • 6 months of experience as a Relief Charge RN or in a team leadership role.

    Licenses and Certifications:

    • Current State of California Registered Nurse license.
    • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Healthcare Providers by the American Heart Association (AHA).
